EISI brings MARC Workshop to Saint Louis University, Baguio City

Electronic Information Solutions Inc, in partnership with Saint Louis University, Baguio City Library, will hold a workshop on Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC21) at the 3/F Audio Visual Room, Msgr. Charles Vath Library Building, Saint Louis University, A. Bonifacio St., Baguio City, on June 30 to July 1, 2011. This is the tenth edition of our MARC21 Workshop Reloaded series which includes two days of intensive training featuring two kinds of MARC21 Format: the Bibliographic that is designed to be a carrier for bibliographic information about printed and manuscript textual materials, computer files, maps, music, continuing resources, visual materials, as well as mixed materials; and Authority that defines the codes and conventions such as tags, indicators, subfield codes, and coded values that identify the data elements in MARC authority records. The current workshop also includes an overview of RDA (Resource Description and Access), a new standard that will be the successor of AACR2.

The MARC Workshop aims to arm Librarians with skills to catalog library materials using MARC format, and to create MARC records using inexpensive pre-processing software, so that the library's MARC database becomes ready for automation. In addition, using the appropriate software, the librarian can produce card catalogs at the same time that they create the MARC records, making the transition from printed to electronic records easier.

EISI believes that much wasted effort can be prevented if Philippine libraries which are not yet automated can make MARC records as a by-product of their current card production & printing procedures. Those who are already into automation can benefit from the better understanding of MARC, enabling them to produce better quality MARC records for their online public access catalogs (OPACs).

The attendees will use internet-connected computers located within the library or training room.

Hands-on Cataloging, Usable output

The participants will be exposed to MARC concepts and actual cataloging practices for various library materials, including multimedia, using books and library materials of their choice. They are expected to produce MARC records ready for importation to any MARC-compliant library system.

EISI's MARC 21 workshop is NOW an accredited CPE provider

Helping librarians to be more competent and updated on the new trends and development in their field, EISI’s MARC 21 workshop provides Continuing Professional Education (CPE) units.
